Central Seminar on Evidence-Based Medicine Held at BSMMU
In the interest of patients and the public, and for the advancement of medical science, the practice of evidence-based medicine is essential: Vice Chancellor
A University Central Seminar titled “The Foundations of Evidence-Based Medicine: Bridging Research and Practice” was held at BSMMU on the subject of evidence-based medicine. The primary aim of evidence-based medicine is to provide the best treatment by integrating clinical experience, patient needs, and the latest scientific research findings. This seminar took place on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the university's E-block auditorium.
In the keynote address, Honorable Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam stated that for the benefit of patients and the public, as well as the progress of medical science, the practice of evidence-based medicine is essential. He emphasized that evidence-based medicine must give priority to scientific evidence and the experience of doctors. The treatment plan is formed by combining proven research, clinical studies, and experience, making evidence-based medicine crucial for providing appropriate medical care. He further mentioned that if doctors follow guidelines when prescribing medications and tests, the treatment costs would be somewhat reduced, and patients would receive proper treatment, leading to recovery. Doctors must follow these guidelines, and if quality guidelines are not available, they should create them themselves and use them for patient care. Prescriptions should not include unregistered products or similar items. The Vice Chancellor pointed out that modern medical science is rapidly evolving globally, and evidence-based medicine is considered an indispensable method to make treatment more effective, safe, and productive. He noted that the discussion in today’s seminar would contribute to the proper integration of research-based knowledge and practical application for doctors. He also warned that without practicing evidence-based medicine, Bangladesh would fall behind in terms of medical progress and development compared to the rest of the world.
Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Zaman explained the fundamental principles of evidence-based medicine and demonstrated how the application of new medical research helps provide safe and effective treatments for patients.
Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Shakur, Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, emphasized the importance of medical research and its practical application. He highlighted that research-based medical approaches play a crucial role in improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment. He stated that this seminar is a significant step toward opening new horizons for medical education in Bangladesh. He presented practical examples and successful applications of research-based medical methods, which contribute to improving treatment quality and ensuring quicker recovery for patients. He also spoke about the introduction of advanced robotic rehabilitation at BSMMU for treating the injured in the July Revolution in Bangladesh.
The speakers at the seminar shared that evidence-based medicine is a method where clinical experience, patient needs, and the latest scientific research findings are integrated to make the best treatment decisions. This not only improves healthcare services but also increases the quality of healthcare and patient recovery rates. Providing treatment based on reliable research data can lead to improvements in the health system in the long run, beyond merely curing diseases. Establishing a bridge between research and clinical experience is now a demand of the time. This initiative will play an essential role in advancing the medical profession and establishing modern healthcare on a more effective and scientific foundation. The seminar covered topics including the history, significance, role of medical research, its application, how to implement research outcomes in patient healthcare, and the role of scientific data in policymaking and medical decision-making.
The seminar reaffirmed BSMMU's commitment to playing a leading role in advancing research and modern medical education. The seminar concluded with an open discussion and a Q&A session where students and doctors exchanged views on the future improvements in research and the healthcare system.
This seminar, organized by the BSMMU Central Seminar Sub-Committee, was attended by special guests: Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development), and Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhter, Treasurer. The main papers were presented by Professor Dr. Md.
