Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) was established in 1998 as the first medical university of the country after the name of the father of the nation. Since its inception, BSMMU has been serving as the leading medical institution that contributing significantly in growth and improvement of postgraduate medical education in Bangladesh.
Being a medical university with focus on healthcare, medical education and research, the University encourages Innovation, Imagination and Insight among its teachers, residents and staffs to develop a competency framework. Prof Dr. Md Shahinul Alam, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Hepatology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and is the pioneer scientist of the country on “Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD/NAFLD. He coauthored the “Clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of metabolic associated fatty liver disease “in 2020 for the Asia Pacific region also. He coauthored many research papers with the scientist from29 countries including Australia, Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. As of Scopus he is the leading scientist of BSMMU. He completed MBBS. FCPS (Medicine) and Doctorate of Medicine (MD) Hepatology
Professor ShahinulAlam was awarded with 7 international awardsby the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) in 2004 in Delhi, India, by the American Association for the Study of the Liver (AASLD) in 2008 in Seoul, South Korea, USA- Japan Joint Medical Science Award (USJMSCP-NIH-APASL) in 2009 at Hongkong, Travel Bursary Award at Indonesia, China and Turkey in 2005, 2010 and 2015 respectively.
Recently he has been appointed as the member of “Global NASH Council”; the USA based organization of the leading scientist of Hepatology of the world. He has supervised 20 theses and co-supervised5theses of students who were awarded Doctorate of Medicine (MD) Hepatology degrees. He was awarded grants as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator of 7 research projects of BSMMU. Of these 3 has got international Award
As Course Coordinator and Member Secretary of the Curriculum Committee of the MD Hepatology course, he contributed heavily tothe development of the “Residency Based” curriculum that started in 2011 in BSMMU and upgraded the scenario of post-graduatecourses of the country. As Member Secretary of the Institutional Quality Assurance Committee (IQAC) of the Department of Hepatology of the university, he organized the evaluation and recommended the upgradation of the course.
As an eminent scientist, he has 160 publications, of these 92 full articles in national and international journals, 3 books, and 1 book chapter. In recognition of these, in Google Scholar his citation is 2873, h- index is 21 and i- 10 index is 36 (https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&authuser=1&user=48Xtf-MAAAAJ) and in Research Gate his score is (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Shahinul-Alam), citation 2524. He presented his research papers in 15 international conferences in UK, Singapore, India, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey and Hongkong.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Hepatology. He is currently contributing as a reviewer of leading scientific publishers of the world including Elsevier, Springer, Blackwell Publishing, Wiley, and Springer Nature.
In recognition of internationalcollaboration for science, he is representing scientists from Bangladesh for “The Acute on Chronic Liver Failure Research Consortium (AARC) and contributed tothe development and upgradation of management guidelines several times. It is the largest collaboration for the research of the disease from 29 countries (http://www.aclf.in/?page=content&itemid=1).
His extracurricular activities were awarded by the Scout Jamboree, National Science Fair, and Bangladesh Shishu Academy several times.
Professor Md Shahinul Alam has been working as General Secretary of the Hepatology Society, Dhaka, Bangladesh organized the International Hepatology Conference biannually since 2009.
He earned the copyright of Food Pyramid on “Dietary Advice for Fatty Liver Patients of Bangladesh”.
He is a member of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), a Life Member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Life member of the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL), Associate Member of British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), Member, European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and a Life member, Indian Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ISGE).
He is the only advocate for people with Chhep B / hep C and activist against state discrimination on people with those diseases. These days many gov jobs disqualify people with ChHep B or C. He is the only clinician in Bangladesh who is working on Medical economics in Bangladesh. Middle class / low income people in Bangladesh spends their life’s saving for one single major surgery or hospitalization and becomes totally penniless! He did conduct valuable research on this phenomenon. He is the author of the book on Bangladesh healthcare finance in comparison to global healthcare financing policy
From 1995 he served in all the level of health services of Bangladesh. He 1st started the government service as Assistant Surgeon at HatiaUpazilla Health Complex, he was the Junior Consultant of Medicine at Patuakhali General Hospital, Assistant Registrar and Registrar of Medicine at Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital and serving as a teacher in BSMMU since 2003.
