BSMMU Administration Holds Discussion with the Department of Ophthalmology and the Community Ophthalmology Department

On the occasion of the New Year, on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the administration of BSMMU held a discussion with the faculty, doctors, and resident students of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Community Ophthalmology Department. During the event, the Honorable Vice Chancellor of BSMMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, stated that the main work of the university is research. The current administration is committed to ensuring all necessary facilities for research. Priority should be given to research that is published with significance in international journals. Hence, the quality of research must be enhanced. More attention should be given to disease prevention and diagnosis. Through providing higher medical education, BSMMU administration is working tirelessly to create specialized doctors to meet the public's needs. In order to achieve this goal, attention must be given to closing the gaps in higher medical education and addressing other specific details. It is essential to ensure quality healthcare services through the integration of new technologies. All stakeholders, including teachers, doctors, residents, nurses, and health workers, must work together to remove any doubts the public may have about healthcare services. By accomplishing all these tasks effectively, visible changes can be made at BSMMU.
The Honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research & Development), Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, said that the resolution for the new year should be to erase the negative aspects of the past through good actions. BSMMU must move forward in research, education, and service. Everyone must fulfill their responsibilities and duties appropriately. Staff must arrive at the office on time. If anyone is absent, the administration will have to take action. Strict measures will be taken for unauthorized absences. However, the university administration wishes that everyone working here will fulfill their respective duties properly, thus establishing BSMMU as an institution of high repute globally.
The meeting was attended by BSMMU's Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research & Development) Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhter, Dean of the Surgery Faculty Professor Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin, Proctor Dr. Sheikh Forhad, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology Professor Dr. Syed Abdul Wadud, Chairman of the Community Ophthalmology Department Professor Dr. Md. Shawkat Kabir, and Director (Hospital) Brigadier General Dr. Md. Rezaur Rahman, among others.
Earlier, on Wednesday morning, BSMMU's administration attended the New Year celebration and farewell ceremony for the 10th batch of residents at the Pediatric Surgery Department in the C-block. During the event, the newly appointed Chairman of the Pediatric Surgery Department, Professor Dr. KM Didarul Islam, was welcomed, and the outgoing Chairman, Professor Dr. Sushankar Kumar Mondal, was honored. It was reported that in 2024, the Pediatric Surgery Department provided medical services to nearly 10,000 patients both indoors and outdoors, with over 1,300 surgeries performed. In 2024, three pairs of conjoined children underwent highly complex surgeries successfully. Among them were 3-month-old Abu Bakar and Omar Farooq, and 1-year and 6-month-old Nuha and Naba, who were successfully separated through a series of complex surgeries. The first two stages of complex surgeries for 1-year and 3-month-old Sumaiya and Khadija were successfully completed. Currently, they are 3.5 years old, and three more complex surgeries will be required to fully separate them. The newly appointed Chairman of the Pediatric Surgery Department expressed hope that with the support of the department and other related Departments, Sumaiya and Khadija will be fully separated after the remaining surgeries.
