Kidney Transplant Service Resumes at BSMMU Super Specialized Hospital

The much-awaited kidney transplant service has resumed at the BSMMU Super Specialized Hospital. On Monday morning, December 23, 2024, the honorable Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahinul Alam, inaugurated the kidney transplant operation. The last kidney transplant at the Super Specialized Hospital was completed on July 28, 2024, marking the 31st transplant.
At today’s inauguration ceremony for the kidney transplant program, several distinguished officials from BSMMU were present, including the esteemed Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Mohammad Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhter, newly appointed Director (Additional Charge) of the Super Specialized Hospital and Dean of the Faculty of Basic Science and Paraclinical Science Professor Dr. Saiful Ullah Munshi, Registrar Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazirul Islam, Proctor Dr. Sheikh Farhad, Chief of the Transplant Program and Urologist Professor Dr. AKM Khurshidul Alam, Renal Transplant Program Coordinator Professor Dr. Touhid Mohammad Saiful Islam Dipu, Additional Director Dr. Mohammad Shahidul Hasan, the Vice-Chancellor’s personal secretary Dr. Mohammad Rahul Kuddus Biplo, and Assistant Professor Dr. Abu Hena Helal Uddin Ahmed.
In today’s 32nd kidney transplant, the donor was 50-year-old Kohinur Begum from Noakhali District, and the recipient was 48-year-old Sahara Begum from Dhaka District. Kohinur Begum is the aunt (father's sister) of Sahara Begum. The transplant operation, which started at 8:00 AM, was successfully completed by 3:00 PM. The total cost for kidney transplantation at BSMMU Super Specialized Hospital is 300,000 BDT. In neighboring countries, the cost for kidney transplant surgery is a minimum of 2.5 million BDT.
In his speech, BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahinul Alam emphasized that kidney transplant services are available in the country, particularly at BSMMU, at a much lower cost compared to abroad. Therefore, patients do not need to travel overseas and incur extra expenses for the procedure.
The surgical team for the kidney donor consisted of Professor Dr. Touhid Mohammad Saiful Islam Dipu, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammad Wahiduzzaman, Assistant Professor Dr. Aktar Kamal Parvez, and Dr. Mohammad Sultan Uddin. The surgical team for the kidney recipient was led by Professor Dr. AKM Khurshidul Alam, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammad Rofiqul Islam, Dr. Mahbubul Islam Khandakar, Dr. Sheikh Imran Mohammad, and Dr. Mashrura Rahman Barsha. The perfusion team included Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid Al Mamun and Dr. Mohammad Ashraful Rahman.
