To reduce the country's dependence on foreign medical services, the administration of BSMMU has emphasized the need to accelerate kidney and liver transplantation, as well as infertility services. On Monday, December 23, 2024, a meeting was held at the Super Specialized Hospital with the newly appointed Director (additional responsibility) and Dean of the Basic Science and Para clinical Science Faculty, Professor Dr. Saiful Ulla Munshi. The Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahinul Alam, led the discussion.
During the meeting, BSMMU’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research & Development) Professor Dr. Mohammad Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhter, Registrar Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazirul Islam, Proctor Dr. Sheikh Farhad, Additional Director Dr. Mohammad Shahidul Hasan, and the Vice-Chancellor’s personal secretary Dr. Mohammad Ruhul Kuddus Biplab were also present.
Through this meeting, a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere was created among the doctors, officers, nurses, and staff of the Super Specialized Hospital.
The Vice-Chancellor and other senior officials highlighted the importance of providing world-class medical services for diseases that commonly cause patients to travel abroad for treatment. They emphasized that if patients could receive high-quality medical care in the country, it would not only reduce the need to go abroad but also save significant foreign currency, which would contribute positively to the national economy.
Each year, a large number of patients travel abroad for kidney and liver transplantation, as well as infertility treatments, which results in significant foreign currency expenditure, creating both financial hardships for patients and a challenge to the country's economy. The BSMMU administration stressed that ensuring world-class kidney and liver transplantation, as well as infertility treatments, in the country is of utmost importance.
The administration also emphasized the need to activate and improve medical services related to heart diseases, particularly in pediatric cardiology, to ensure world-class care. It was also pointed out that the Super Specialized Hospital’s various operating units, including the OT modules for obstetrics and gynecology, must be fully operational.
The BSMMU Super Specialized hospital have several important centers, including the Accident and Emergency Center, Kidney Diseases and Kidney Transplant Center, Maternal and Child Health Care Center, Cardio and Cerebro vascular Center, Hepatobiliary, Herpetology, Gastroenterology, Pancreatic Diseases and Liver Transplant Center, and a 100-bed ICU unit. The administration emphasized the importance of fully activating these centers to provide top-quality care.
